아미스타 스테이는 동대문역 인근, 봉제공장과 오토바이, 전깃줄이 뒤엉킨 창신동의 골목 안쪽에 자리한 쉐어하우스다. 오래된 도시의 분주한 일상 속에서 이 건물은 소리를 낮추듯 조용히 서 있다. ‘아미스타(Amistad)’는 스페인어로 ‘우정’을 뜻하는 말로, 낯선 도시에서 서로 다른 사람들이 잠시 머물며 관계를 만들어가는 장소의 성격을 담고 있다.

건물은 지하 1층부터 지상 5층까지 구성되어 있으며, 하부는 임대 가능한 근린생활시설로, 상부 3~5층은 청년들을 위한 쉐어하우스로 계획되었다. 방의 크기는 결코 넉넉하지 않지만, 각 공간은 도심 속에서 최소한의 사적인 영역을 확보하는 데 집중했다. 이곳은 ‘크게 살기’보다는 ‘혼자서도 잘 머무를 수 있는 집’에 가깝다.

정북일조 규제로 인해 4층과 5층의 평면은 비틀리고 단차가 발생한다. 일반적으로는 불리한 조건이지만, 아미스타에서는 이를 공간의 개성으로 받아들였다. 어긋난 평면과 층별 차이는 각 방에 서로 다른 분위기와 기억을 만들어내며, 동일한 구조가 반복되는 전형적인 쉐어하우스와는 다른 경험을 제공한다.

전면에 마련된 넓은 발코니와 절제된 흰색 입면은 주변의 복잡한 도시 풍경과 대비를 이룬다. 장식을 최소화한 외형은 오히려 이 건물이 골목 속에서 또렷하게 인식되도록 한다. 아미스타 스테이는 눈에 띄기 위해 소리치지 않는다. 대신, 낡은 도시의 틈새에서 조용히 새로운 주거의 가능성을 제안한다.

AMISTA Stay is a shared housing project located in the inner alleys of Changsin-dong, near Dongdaemun Station—an area defined by sewing factories, motorbikes, and tangled overhead wires. Amid this dense and restless urban fabric, the building stands quietly, almost withdrawing itself from the surrounding noise. The name “Amista,” derived from the Spanish word amistad meaning “friendship,” reflects the idea of a place where individuals temporarily coexist and form subtle relationships within the city.

The building consists of one basement level and five stories above ground. The lower levels accommodate leasable neighborhood commercial spaces, while the upper floors—from the third to the fifth—are planned as a shared house for young residents. The rooms are modest in size, yet carefully designed to secure a minimum but meaningful sense of privacy. Rather than proposing a generous lifestyle, AMISTA focuses on offering a place where one can stay independently and comfortably within the city.

Due to daylight regulations, the fourth and fifth floors are shaped by shifted plans and level differences. Instead of treating these constraints as limitations, the project embraces them as spatial characteristics. The irregular floor plates create subtle variations in each room, offering residents slightly different spatial experiences and memories—distinguishing AMISTA from conventional, repetitive shared housing models.

The wide front-facing balcony and restrained white façade form a quiet contrast against the chaotic urban backdrop. By minimizing decoration, the building gains clarity and presence within the narrow alley. AMISTA Stay does not attempt to stand out through spectacle. Rather, it positions itself as a calm architectural proposition—suggesting an alternative form of urban living within the overlooked gaps of the city.
