당산동 뒷골목 28.4m2(8.5평) 대지에 세워진 5층 건물이다. 마치 우뚝 서있는 기둥처럼 보인다 하여 건물의 이름도 칼럼(Column)이다.각 층당 하나의 공간들이 위치한다. 칼럼 빌딩은 철저하게 ‘조화’를 염두해두고 디자인을 진행하였다. 도시미관을 고려할 때도 ‘조화’를 선택하는 게 훨씬 이점이 많아 보였다. 대지 바로 옆에는 비슷한 규모의 협소주택이 위치하고 있다. 두 건물의 ‘조화로움’에도 각별히 신경 썼다. 서로 간섭이 발생하지 않도록 건물을 배치하고 창호를 계획하였다. 각자의 프라이버시가 최대한 보장되도록 건물을 계획하였다.

외장색상을 선택할 때도 서로 어울리도록 계획하였다. 서로 독립된 다른 건물이지만 하나의 풍경으로 인식될 게 분명하기 때문이다. 이는 앞으로 주변에 들어설 작은 건물들에게 보내는 나만의 제안이기도 하다. 우리나라 골목에서도 서로 조화를 이룬 협소건축 단지를 보고싶은 기대를 담고 있다.

This is a five-story building on a 28.4m² site in the back alleys of Dangsan-dong. It stands tall, resembling a column, hence the name "Column". Each floor contains a single space. Though small in size, the building was designed with the intention of being an independent corporate office.

The first floor serves as a café and meeting space. The second and third floors are office spaces for the staff. The fourth and fifth floors are designed as more focused workspaces. The rooftop also offers a place for occasional relaxation.

On a small site, the form of the building is often determined by the surrounding conditions. After calculating the given roads, buildings, and regulations, architects often find that there's very little left for them to decide.

However, before all these considerations, the architect can make one choice: to create a building that stands out from its surroundings or one that harmonizes with them. The Column Building was designed with a strong focus on "harmony".

Right next to the site is a similarly scaled small house. Special attention was given to ensuring harmony between the two buildings. The building was positioned and the windows were designed to avoid interference and to maximize privacy for both.

Although they are two separate buildings, they will inevitably be perceived as part of the same landscape. This is my personal suggestion for the future of small buildings in Korean alleyways.
